Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is MAMMOTH CONTROL? MAMMOTH CONTROL is a contact and vapor-action fungicide, miticide, and insecticide made from 100% natural ingredients (including targeted thyme oil compounds like thymol and corn oil). It’s formulated for both prevention and elimination of powdery mildew, Botrytis (gray mold), mites, aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and fungus gnats. Lab- and greenhouse-tested, it’s compatible for indoor and outdoor cultivation, leaves no toxic residue, and does not affect plant quality, flavor, aroma, or testing compliance.

What is the underlying technology and how does it work? MAMMOTH CONTROL uses a dual mode of action (MOA):

Suffocant action — Oils coat insects/mites, blocking spiracles (air holes) and causing asphyxiation.

Natural deterrent via thymol and other thyme compounds — Thymol, a primary phenolic monoterpene in thyme oil, targets multiple cellular sites for broad-spectrum control.

Against fungi (e.g., powdery mildew, Botrytis): Thymol disrupts fungal cell membranes by interfering with ergosterol biosynthesis (a key sterol for membrane integrity), increasing membrane permeability, inducing lipid peroxidation, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), and causing ion leakage and cell death. This leads to hyphal distortion, inhibited mycelial growth, and suppressed spore germination (e.g., effective against Botrytis cinerea at low concentrations; studies in PMC articles and MDPI journals).

Against insects/mites (e.g., aphids, thrips, mites): Beyond suffocation, thymol interferes with nervous system function via GABAergic activity (modulating GABA receptors, sodium/potassium/calcium channels), contributing to paralysis, deterrence of colonization, and reduced propagation (EPA notes novel cellular action compared to synthetics).

This multi-targeted, natural approach minimizes resistance risk and provides effective prevention/elimination. Thymol is recognized by the U.S. EPA as a low-toxicity, minimum-risk pesticide ingredient under FIFRA section 25(b), with exemptions from tolerance requirements for residues in food commodities when used per good agricultural practices (Federal Register, 2009 & 2022; EPA reregistration documents).

  • How is MAMMOTH CONTROL different from the original MAMMOTH Biocontrol Preventative Insecticide? The original MAMMOTH Biocontrol Preventative Insecticide has been discontinued because MAMMOTH CONTROL (and its intermediate evolution through CannControl) proved to be a far superior formula. It’s now 3x more concentrated (application rate: 1 oz per gallon), adds full fungicide action alongside miticide/insecticide benefits, includes a built-in surfactant (30% oleic acid) for enhanced coverage—no extras needed—and delivers broader, more effective control over mold, mildew, and pests.
  • Is Biocontrol still available? No—the original MAMMOTH Biocontrol Preventative Insecticide has been discontinued and replaced in the lineup. MAMMOTH CONTROL is the current, upgraded version that builds on and surpasses it, with growers seeing even better results in concentration, versatility, and performance.
  • I just ordered Biocontrol (or an older version)—should I have waited? We’re glad you’re a fan of the earlier formula! While it performed well, MAMMOTH CONTROL is the evolved, superior successor—more concentrated, broader in scope (now a true fungicide too), and more convenient. We encourage you to try it on your next cycle for the enhanced benefits.
  • What exactly is a biocontrol product, and why is it better than synthetic chemicals? Biocontrol products like MAMMOTH CONTROL use naturally derived active ingredients (exempt from many EPA regulations) as a safe, effective alternative to synthetics. They pose little to no risk to human health or the environment while providing proven pest and disease control.

Application and Compatibility

  • Is MAMMOTH CONTROL compatible with all applicators? Yes—its mixed viscosity and density are slightly less than pure water, making it compatible with virtually all methods, including pump nozzles, air-induction nozzles, rotary disk atomizers, Micronair systems, controlled droplet application (CDA), foggers, backpack sprayers, tank sprayers, manual sprayers, and more.
  • How and when should I apply MAMMOTH CONTROL? Apply weekly as a foliar spray (or root drench where appropriate) when plants won’t be exposed to direct sunlight or intense lighting for at least 8 hours afterward. Ensure plants are well-hydrated first. Always follow label directions—deviations may reduce efficacy or cause plant stress.
  • When can I apply it during flowering? MAMMOTH CONTROL can be applied late into flower as needed (e.g., for active pest or mold pressure), and it leaves no residue or negatively affects plant quality, flavor, aroma, or testing in any way. However, as a best practice with oil-based products, avoid routine foliar applications very late in flower to minimize any potential (though unlikely) impact on bud development or sensory qualities. Always conduct a precautionary test on a few plants/leaves first and observe for a few days.
  • When should I stop applying? Stop immediately if you see signs of phytotoxicity (e.g., leaf burn). Always conduct a small precautionary test on your plants/cultivar. Avoid use on newly planted cuttings or drought-stressed plants. For late-flower applications, use judgment based on need, but best practice is to phase out foliar sprays well before harvest if possible.
  • Do I need to add a surfactant? No—MAMMOTH CONTROL already includes 30% oleic acid, an extremely effective built-in surfactant for improved coverage and performance.
  • Does water quality or pH matter? Tap water is fine—no need for filtered or RO water. Most plant water falls in the 6–7.5 pH range; no pH adjustments are required for application.
  • Can I use it in aquaponics systems? No—MAMMOTH CONTROL is not approved for aquaponics.
  • Are there microbes in MAMMOTH CONTROL? No—it contains no live microbes.

Efficacy, Safety, and Testing

  • Why use it as a preventative if it eliminates issues? By the time pests, mold, or mildew are visible, significant damage has often already occurred. Preventative use lowers infestation risk at a low cost relative to plant value.
  • What’s the advantage over similar products (e.g., neem-based)? Specifically tested on cannabis, MAMMOTH CONTROL uses proprietary thyme oil compounds (including thymol) for superior efficacy against mold, mildew, mites, and insects. It matches or exceeds neem performance without concerns sometimes associated with azadirachtin. Generic thyme oils are less effective due to lacking our targeted formulation.
  • Will it show up in testing/residue tests? No—as a FIFRA 25(b) minimum-risk pesticide (exempt from EPA registration), its plant-derived ingredients leave zero toxic residue and are safe for testing/compliance. It does not affect plant quality in any way.
  • Will it interfere with other products or IPM strategies? It has not shown interference with other inputs, but use caution with additional oil-based products to avoid phytotoxicity. It can integrate into IPM (including with predatory insects/mites), but apply sequentially to avoid impacting beneficials.
  • Are the ingredients safe? Yes—categorized as a 25(b) minimum-risk pesticide under EPA guidelines, with ingredients posing little to no risk to human health or the environment. Refer to the product SDS on our site for details.
  • Should I handle it with caution? Follow label instructions. Wear eye protection to avoid irritation and appropriate clothing to prevent skin contact.

Storage, Shelf Life, and Availability

Can you ship internationally? Currently, MAMMOTH CONTROL is available only in the United States. Check the “Stores” or “Where to Buy” page for approved retailers and locations.

What is the shelf life and how should I store it? Stable for 24 months from the manufacture date (MFD) on the bottle. Once opened, use within 6 months. Store at room temperature, away from freezing (<32°F/0°C), extreme heat (>90°F/32°C), direct sunlight, and keep the lid tightly closed to prevent evaporation.

What does the number stamped on the bottle indicate? It’s the lot number and manufacture date (MFD) for quality tracking and to confirm the 24-month shelf life.
